How to Learn Maths More Effectively! By Ultimate Maths | Tips & Tricks | April 02, 2017 | See comments Learning mathematics can be a very enjoyable but sometimes also a difficult experience. Some students easily understand mathematical concepts whereas others may struggle to comprehend and apply these. Here are out top 5 tips on how to learn mathematics more effectively. 1. Master basic key skills The first thing you have to do is learn the basics. This is probably true for every school subject. In maths learning the theory of how to solve certain problems is vital in order for you to do practise questions or tests. For instance, you need to be able to know how to factorise a quadratic before you can apply this to a problem. 2. Work through examples Examples can be found in almost any maths text book and they really help you to understand key concepts as you see how a real question can be attacked and solved. After you have understood the basic concept it is also good idea to actually try the examples yourself and then check after every step or at the very end whether your approach and solution is correct. 3. Do practise questions Practise makes perfect! The more practise questions you do on a topic the better you will get. It is best to start off with easier questions that simply test your understanding of the topic before moving on to more difficult ones that have an extra twist to them and really challenge your maths skills. Make sure to come back to previous topics regularly and do questions on these to make sure that you do not forget what you have already learnt. Doing skill builder questions before exams can also prove very helpful. 4. Review mistakes and difficult questions Learning from your mistakes is another key part to learning mathematics. If you got the wrong answer to a problem, check where you went wrong and try a similar question to see if you can avoid the mistake. Make a note of particularly challenging questions and revisit those regularly to remember how to do them. 5. Do past papers and apply mathematics This last point focuses more on doing well in assessments. The key to succeeding in a test is really to try as many past papers as possible. Even if you are not the best mathematician, working through past papers allows you to get used to the types of questions that will be asked while at the same time allowing you to practise the entire syllabus. This way, some students have scored 1-2 grades higher than their current grades. We hope these tips will help you to make learning maths easier and more enjoyable. Every student has their own way of learning and you have to experiment to see which combination of the above techniques best suits you. Good luck!
