When displaying numbers in standard form, you might also need to calculate with them to draw conclusions. It is relatively easy to calculate with numbers in standard form.Multiplying Standard FormYou can easily multiply and divide standard form without having to convert it back to a normal number. To do so, we use the laws of indices and simple multiplication operations. Have a look at the example on the right. To multiply in standard form, we just need to multiply the two coefficients together (3.5 x 2) and add the indices (4+5). Then we end up with the answer which is . There are a couple more example underneath. Dividing Standard FormDividing standard form is very similar to multiplying standard form. The procedure is the same just that this time we divide the coefficients and subtract the indices. In the example on the right, we have solved the problem by dividing 4.8 by 2 and subtracting the indices (7-5). This gave us the solution which is . Have a look at the examples underneath.Adding & Subtracting Standard FormWhen adding or subtracting standard form, we have to convert it back to normal number. Once this is accomplished, it is just a normal addition or subtraction problem and should not be very difficult to do. There are two examples underneath. One subtraction and one addition problem.Calculating in Standard Form using a CalculatorIf you have access to a calculator, you can solve standard form problems by simply typing them in and pressing the enter button. This works for all operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication & division).Mastering Standard Form?By now you should be able to convert and calculate with standard form.
